AVID
Hello Parents,
For those who are not
aware, AVID is an acronym for:
Advancement
Via
Individual
Determination.
This class is designed
to give average students a chance to improve on the skills they need to make it
through college. The AVID philosophy is that if students can learn about
and practice core academic and organizational skills starting in Middle School
(or even earlier), they will have a much greater chance to be successful college
students.
My year in AVID has been
a learning experience. I attended AVID program training in
San Diego last summer. One of the most frequent comments at the
training about the average AVID classroom is that it is never dull and quiet.
They certainly got that right! It has been awesome to get the chance to
work with so many wonderful and hard-working students this year. Their
energy, creativity, humor, and passion for learning is truly inspiring on a
daily basis, and also fairly LOUD on a daily basis! I guess they really
weren't joking at that training! With the increased volume has also come
increased learning and a sense of peer support as they help each other achieve
their academic goals. The AVID training and philosophy has actually
influenced the way I teach all of my classes.
As you can see, AVID is all about
improving success at school. Mira Loma Middle School has a definite need
to improve student success, but not just for our AVID students. Test
scores school-wide show that all of our students need to improve. Because
of this, Mira Loma Middle School has strived to make some major and exciting
changes for the entire school based on the AVID program and philosophy.
These changes are designed to help address our need for increased school-wide
student achievement.
Of course, change of
this magnitude brings some unavoidable problems. In this case, our new
schedule places a much greater need for me to teach other classes, and
unfortunately, the schedule will
not allow me to be able to continue teaching AVID next school year. I was
looking forward to a second year of AVID, as there are so many new things I
wanted to try with my class. At the same time, I know that all of the
students in my exploratory classes will continue to benefit from my AVID
training. Hopefully, our schedule can be tweaked a bit in the future and I
will once again have the awesome opportunity to teach an AVID class. In
the meantime, we have some fun experiences ahead of us in our AVID class as we
head into the last part of the school year.
Stop back to the site; I will keep things updated as we go.
Mr. Schumacher
